We say thumbs down … to the six Upstate Republican senators who voted against their constituents’ interests (and in favor of their own) by installing a Downstate colleague as their leader.

New York State Sen. John Flanagan, R-East Northport, has won the Republican caucus support to become the Senate majority leader John DeFrancisco, right, are vying to become the next Senate majority leader, sources are telling reporters in Albany. Sen. John DeFrancisco, R-Syracuse, was also vying for the leadership post. The Senate Republican caucus met May 11, 2015 in Albany, N.Y. to pick a successor to arrested Majority Leader Dean Skelos. The Associated Press

Last week, state Sen. John DeFrancisco had the chance to become the first Senate Majority Leader from Syracuse since 1932, replacing the disgraced Dean Skelos. Going into caucus, DeFrancisco thought he had the votes … until commitments from his Upstate colleagues evaporated as it became clear Sen. John Flanagan, R-Long Island, would prevail. A profile in political courage, it was not.

DeFrancisco says he’s moved on. But voters should remember the Upstate Six when Election Day rolls around in 2016. They are Michael Nozzolio, Fayette; James Seward, Milford; John Bonacic, Mount Hope; Hugh Farley, Niskayuna; Bill Larkin, Cornwall-on-Hudson; and Cathy Young, Olean.
We say thumbs down to the senators who turned their backs on Upstate. What do you say?
