MRC Alert: Foreign Policy Editor Blames Paris Terror Attack on Abu Ghraib

1. Foreign Policy Editor Blames Paris Terror Attack on Abu Ghraib

Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Thursday, David Rothkopf, CEO and editor of The FP Group, which publishes Foreign Policy magazine, warned against European authorities being too aggressive in fighting Islamic terrorism following the brutal attack in Paris: “I think we have to be just as worried about the reaction to the attack from nationalists, from right-wingers, from people who have sought to drive this wedge…between the Islamic communities and the mainstream communities in Europe….it’s very important that we recognize the value of restraint in response to these things.” Moments later, he cited the Abu Ghraib prison scandal: “You know, one of the reports has it that one of these guys who led this attack was radicalized by reading about Abu Ghraib, that prior to that he was not an extremist…”

2. NBC Nightly News Declines to Label Retiring California Senator Barbara Boxer a Liberal

In a news brief on Thursday, NBC Nightly News reported that one of Californi’s two Democratic Senators, Barbara Boxer, would not seek reelection in 2016 and instead retire following “a decade in the House” and her first election to the Senate in 1992. When it came to labeling where she stood politically, however, NBC shied away from labeling her a liberal or progressive. Instead, anchor Brian Williams told viewers that she was “one of the most prominent” Democrats and likely caused fellow “prominent California Democrats” to hold “a lot of meetings and phone calls today.” In the past, however, NBC Nightly News hasn’t hesitated to apply ideological labels to conservative Senators.

3. CBS Guest: Tearing Down NFL Stadium Is Racist

The NFL’s San Francisco 49ers moved out of famed Candlestick Park in 2014 after more than 40 years, leaving the stadium with no permanent tenant. As a result, the city of San Francisco announced that the stadium will be demolished but not without criticism from many in the community regarding the environmental impact of destroying a structure built with asbestos and lead paint. On Thursday, CBS This Morning highlighted the ongoing battle surrounding the stadium’s future and featured one San Francisco resident insisting that it would be racist to demolish Candlestick Park. Speaking to CBS reporter John Blackstone, Marlee-I Hand argued that “it’s black matters, black lives matter situation. I think that environmental justice is something that they don’t consider in poor black neighborhoods.”

4. NBC Nightly News Allows Correspondent Maria Shriver to Report on Her Own Movie

During Tuesday’s NBC Nightly News, one of the segments focused on a movie set to be released in theaters January 16 starring Julianne Moore as a woman faced with Alzheimers. While the movie, entitled “Still Alice,” focuses on an important topic and covering upcoming movie releases is nothing new for the networks, an executive producer for the movie is none other than NBC News correspondent Maria Shriver. In what was already a conflict of interest by covering the movie, the network also allowed Shriver to play the role of reporter in promoting a venture that could benefit her financially in a two-minute-and-28-second segment.
