Holder Aide Accidentally Calls Issa’s Office for Help in Spinning IRS Scandal, Nets Don’t Report

1. Holder Aide Accidentally Calls Issa’s Office for Help in Spinning IRS Scandal, Nets Don’t Report

An aide to Eric Holder, who thought he was calling Democratic congressman Elijah Cummings’ office for help on leaking documents to selected reporters, accidentally spilled the beans of the latest IRS spin job because he called House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa’s office instead. This newest twist in the IRS targeting scandal, that broke Tuesday night, was not covered on ABC, CBS or NBC’s Wednesday morning shows. http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/holder-aide-accidentally-calls-issas-office-help-spinning-irs-scandal-nets-dont-report

2. NBC Frets Over ‘Country Club Snub’ Upsetting Obama’s Golf Game

Wednesday’s NBC Today was the only network morning show to cover President Obama being refused tee times at several top golf courses during his Labor Day weekend trip to New York, with co-host Matt Lauer declaring: “…the President has faced some criticism recently over the time he spends playing golf….[now] more problems tied to his favorite hobby.” Fellow co-host Willie Geist explained: “Club managers saying they didn’t want to inconvenience their high-profile and dues-paying members by shutting down their courses to accommodate the President during the busy holiday weekend.” Moments later, Geist seemed to fault the courses by labeling the refusals a “country club snub.” http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/nbc-frets-over-country-club-snub-upsetting-obamas-golf-game

3. Carney, McCain Engage in Epic Battle on CNN Over Obama’s Handling of Iraq and ISIS

After President Obama’s speech to the nation on Wednesday night, CNN brought on its newly-minted senior political commenator and former Obama White House Press Secretary Jay Carney and Republican Senator John McCain (Ariz.) to comment on what the President’s speech regarding U.S policy in dealing withy the Islamic terrorist group ISIS. However, the next eight minutes instantly evolved into a heated debate between the two over the President’s actions of withdrawing troops from Iraq early in his administration and whether that allowed a threat like ISIS to proliferate. With CNN’s Anderson Cooper only stepping in during a few occasions, the two went back and forth, frequently speaking overtop of one another, with McCain declaring at separate points that “[f]acts are stubborn things, Mr. Carney” and “[y]ou don’t have all the facts, Mr. Carney. That is the problem.” http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/carney-mccain-engage-epic-battle-cnn-over-obamas-handling-iraq-and-isis

4. NBC’s Richard Engel Pans Obama’s ISIS Speech As ‘Wildly Off-Base’ and ‘an Oversimplification of the Problem’

After President Obama’s speech to the nation on Wednesday night, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow asked NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel what he thought of President Obama’s analogy that the U.S. strategy in fighting terrorism in Yemen and Somalia would carry over to dealing with the Islamic terrorist group ISIS in both Iraq and Syria. Needless to say, Engel was not at all pleased with the comparison the President made, telling Maddow immediately that “I think it is wildly off base, frankly” and “[i]t’s an oversimplification of the problem.” http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/nbcs-richard-engel-pans-obamas-isis-speech-wildly-base-and-oversimplification-problem

5. Bill Maher Schools PBS Host Charlie Rose Over Islam’s ‘Illiberal Beliefs’

HBO’s Bill Maher clashed with Charlie Rose on the veteran host’s PBS show on Tuesday over the atheist’s outspoken views on Islam. Maher underlined the “illiberal beliefs that are held by vast numbers of Muslim people.” Rose countered with a left-wing talking point: “Vast number of Christians, too.” The comedian shot back, “No, no. That’s not true – not true. Vast numbers of Christians do not believe that if you leave the Christian religion, you should be killed for it.” Rose later cited another regularly-used, politically-correct claim in defense of Islam: “What we see with ISIS is not representative of the Islamic religion. I don’t think the Koran teach them to do these kinds of things.” Maher wasn’t buying this argument. http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/bill-maher-schools-pbs-host-charlie-rose-over-islams-illiberal-beliefs

6. Blackout: 300 Days Since ABC’s ‘Nightline’ Covered ObamaCare

As of September 10, 2014, it’s been 300 days since ABC’s Nightline covered ObamaCare. In the 43 weeks since November 14, 2013, the show has avoided problems with the health care law and instead focused on extremely superficial topics, such as nude reality shows and the royal baby. When the Associated Press reported, “More people newly insured by Medicaid under ObamaCare are seeking treatment in hospital emergency rooms,” the hosts of Nightline didn’t notice. Two new reports found that ObamaCare has not cut the rate of uninsured children. Again, Nightline was silent. What were the hosts covering instead? http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/blackout-300-days-abcs-nightline-covered-obamacare
