Tracking Liberal Media Bias Since 1996

1. 89 Percent of Network Stories Omit Obama’s Role in Causing Border Crisis

While all three networks played clips of Barack Obama on Monday blaming the GOP for the border crisis, they have been reluctant to cite the President’s own failure to enforce immigration laws as a cause for thousands of immigrants illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexican border. From June 8 through the morning of July 1 ABC, CBS and NBC have offered a total of 45 stories on the border crisis, on their evening and morning shows, and in only 5 (11 percent) have they brought up Obama immigration policies as a possible cause for the most recent surge of illegal immigrants, including unaccompanied children, crossing the border. http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/89-percent-network-stories-omit-obamas-role-causing-border-crisis

2. NBC Promotes Twitter Handle For Illegal Immigrants: #RefugeeRiders

On Wednesday morning, NBC’s Today went beyond avoiding using the term “illegal” to describe the immigrants being bussed from Texas into California but the Peacock network has created a Twitter handle to show its support for the illegal immigrants. Following a report by NBC’s Miguel Almaguer, Today anchor Matt Lauer triumphantly declared: “We want you to weigh in on this. Share your comments using the #RefugeeRiders.” http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/nbc-promotes-twitter-handle-illegal-immigrants-refugeeriders

3. ABC, NBC Fail to Use the Term ‘Illegal’ In Story On Illegal Immigrants Being Bused Across Country

On Tuesday, all three network evening newscasts hyped a protest in Murrieta, California where residents objected to busloads of illegal immigrants being sent to their town to be processed by border patrol agents. While all three networks covered the story, only the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley actually called the 140 passengers “illegal immigrants” with ABC and NBC choosing to call them “migrants” and “undocumented immigrants” respectively. http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/abc-nbc-fail-use-term-illegal-story-illegal-immigrants-being-bused-across-country

4. ABC, NBC Ignore Obama’s Immigration Rant; CBS Pits Obama, Boehner Against GOP

The broadcast network morning newscasts came and went on Tuesday with NBC’s Today and ABC’s Good Morning America ignoring President Obama’s latest rant against Republicans. CBS This Morning devoted a full 2 minutes and 45 seconds to Obama’s rant against House Republicans for refusing to accept his parameters for immigration reform and bucking their own Speaker on his willingness to take up the matter. In his report, CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante cast Obama in a heroic light, heralding how “[t]he president went to the Rose Garden and teed off on Republicans and Congress for not allowing a vote on the immigration reform bill even though many members personally supported it. As a result, he says, he will take matters into his own hands.” http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/abc-nbc-ignore-obamas-immigration-rant-cbs-pits-obama-boehner-against-gop

5. ABC’s GMA Yawns at Hobby Lobby Ruling; Spotlights ‘Running of the Interns’

NBC and ABC omitted covering the Supreme Court’s final two rulings from their Tuesday morning newscasts, despite the fact that the decisions came down after their Monday episodes aired. Only CBS This Morning set aside air time for the ruling in the Hobby Lobby case, which upheld the religious liberty rights of closely held corporations. Viewers of ABC’s Good Morning America might have guessed that the Supreme Court handed down some decisions, as the morning show devoted a full segment to the “running of the interns,” where the summer interns of media outlets run copies of Court’s “big rulings” to the journalists outside. GMA even held their own intern race, where the competitors run cups of iced coffee to the anchors inside the studio. http://www.mrc.org/biasalerts/abcs-gma-yawns-hobby-lobby-ruling-spotlights-running-interns
