Albany, NY…April 27 – Today the New York GOP released the following statement:
Republican County Executives Rob Astorino in Westchester and Scott Vanderhoef in Rockland have consistently maintained that building a new bridge must be a priority of both the state and federal governments.
Today’s report in the Journal News that the Department of Transportation has denied the crucial $2 billion federal loan to help finance the new Tappan Zee Bridge, confirms what most American’s have come to expect from the Obama Administration – ineffectual and incompetent government.
How can a project be fast tracked in October and killed in April? It’s called fast tracking a “bridge to nowhere.”
This also points to a failure in leadership on the parts of Senators Gillibrand and Schumer and Governor Cuomo to secure the necessary federal funds from President Obama.
New Yorkers know that the Tappan Zee is a “slow motion disaster.” Absent ceaseless repairs, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, the bridge risks collapse or shut down. The loss of the bridge would create an unmitigated economic calamity effecting interstate commerce.
County Executives Astorino and Vanderhoef have implored the Governor to include mass transit into any new Tappan Zee Bridge as a way to ensure that the bridge is not obsolete on day one and protects the environment going forward. Governor Cuomo, who has acknowledged the importance of a new bridge, has been conspicuously silent and woefully inert.
The cause of rebuilding New York’s infrastructure will only succeed if it has a champion, and New York’s two U.S. Senators and Governor are the only elected officials with the political capital to get the job done. Today’s news makes clear that they have neither the will nor the ability.
